Welcome to Lia’s Cucina. I love talking and learning about food, cooking and health. I’ll use this blog as an outlet for that. I hope that you’ll find it interesting enough to read! Feel free to e-mail me at aboutlia@gmail.com.
I started this blog as an incentive to be more creative in the kitchen (or cucina) and keep healthy. I love real, good, nutritious whole foods. That’s what you’ll see here on the blog — most of the time. I believe there can be a healthy balance between “real” food and food like French fries or brownies, for example.
I have been reading food & healthy living blogs for months now and finally got inspired enough to make one of my own. Just like many of the other food bloggers out there, I try to balance my love for food with being healthy and fit.
Besides food, I am passionate about public health, and food politics especially. “Food politics” involves how the food you eat is regulated, labeled, marketed and monitored. The American diet, the obesity epidemic, food safety, the so-called “Western diseases” and the intersection of regulatory agencies and major food corporations are topics that, I believe, are extremely important for everyone to think about. The state of American food politics largely influences the way I eat.
I hope you enjoy the recipes, restaurant reviews, commentary on food politics and whatever else I post here on Lia’s Cucina. Thanks for reading!
I am 21 and a senior at New York University. In May, I’ll be graduating with a B.A. in Politics with a minor in Social & Public Policy and a certificate in Political Economy. I am writing my senior thesis on the politics of recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) labeling and regulation.
Both of my parents are Italian and my favorite food in the world is Italian food. I named the blog Lia’s Cucina because the majority of the food I cook and eat is Italian-inspired. I studied abroad in Florence in the fall of 2008 and it was the best time of my life!
I love to cook and experiment with recipes but I am not a fan of baking and using measurements. All the recipes you see on the blog will use estimates of ingredients.
My favorite thing to do is try new restaurants. I look forward to posting lots of restaurant reviews on the blog.
I have been in a long-distance relationship with my boyfriend, Kevin, who lives in Boston, for almost three years now. I will be making the move there after graduation!
I grew up in Albany, New York.
After graduation this spring, one of my goals is to “learn” to run. I am not at all an athlete and almost never work out besides a little yoga. I plan to document my journey on the blog!
I work part-time as a legal assistant for a solo practitioner attorney (I was pre-law up until this fall before ultimately deciding it wasn’t for me).
When I have down time, or am procrastinating, I am almost always watching television! I am a TV addict. My favorite channel, of course, is the Food Network — Giada and The Barefoot Contessa are my favorites.
I am obsessed with J. Crew and Anthropologie in a bad way.
