Oh, Karen

Oh, Karen. You always entice me with your healthy soups and sandwiches. Now you’ve got me hooked on your juice, too?!

Monday was the mixed vegetable. Today was the carrot supreme: carrots, banana and vanilla frozen yogurt. It was sweet, creamy and wonderful.

I also had some tuna dill salad (tuna, mayo, dill, celery — I hate mayo, but love this). And a roll.

‘Twas gigantic.

I obviously finished it.

Here’s a shot of my friend Jeremy’s turkey brie sandwich. I’ve had this before and, of course, it is fantastic.

Oh, Karen. You should hire me as your spokesperson…and give me free meals!

So here’s an update about my blogging patterns. Remember last week when I said I was going to blog three times a day? Yeah. Well I don’t think that’s a good idea anymore. I love my fellow food bloggers and reading about all their meals, but I am a creature of habit. As you know, I eat almost the same breakfast everyday, and repeat many other meals. No one wants to see the same ‘ole things over and over again. That said, I will only be posting “unique” meals from now on. I want to post at least once a day, so this will give me an incentive to have more “unique” meals! For example, I almost always get soup or a sandwich from Karen’s. I wanted to be able to post something interesting today, so, I tried something new. Groundbreaking! ;-)

Onwards and upwards!

See you tonight.

Vegelicious

I tried my first vegetable juice today! I ordered the mixed vegetable juice at Karen’s for lunch. It had: carrots, beets, spinach, celery, cucumber and parsley. Vegelicious! It took a minute to get used to, but it actually tasted pretty good! The carrots and beets sweetened it up and the parsley gave it a nice kick.

I also had a split pea soup with a lovely roll on the side :-)

And for dinner…the last of my pasta with pesto, broccoli rabe and cherry tomatoes. This just got better and better as the days went on. I definitely recommend it as a cold salad!

Sad to have finished this…I’ll definitely be making it again! I ate dinner at like 4:45 today. Does that officially make me an old woman? Yikes. I have a water deficit going on today and that was most likely the culprit. Split pea soup almost always holds me over!

Yum-O.

Attention: I updated my Food Politics page, so feel free to check it out!

Newsworthy –

I loved the Amateur Gourmet’s Ten Rules for Food Blogging. Check out what Bart wrote on the chalkboard: I will not use a flash in restaurants. Ha! Ask any of my friends who’ve been out to eat with me recently — I am super embarrassed about using the flash, but my camera is so crappy that I need to! Please excuse my horrible photos guys, I have a feeling I’ll have a new camera once graduation rolls around ;-)

It’s been too long

It’s been too long! I haven’t had Karen’s split pea soup since before winter break. It was so good. This is my #1 favorite thing to get at Karen’s…and I have been coming here at least once a week for 2 years :-D

This soup fills me right up and makes me feel great. Love, love, love split pea.

I have to get a lot of work done today so I’ll see you for dinner!

Jill’s in town!

Hey guys! Once I met up with Jill, we headed straight to Karen’s for some deliciousness. Here’s what we got:

I had a carrot ginger soup.

Jill had the white bean broccoli rabe soup.

And then we split a tuna dill sandwich :-D

Hi Jillie.

Then we headed over to Think for a pick-me-up. Here I am in my unflattering glory.

Iced coffee yay!

We are watching Food Network until Il Buco :-D

Overboard

SVUbowl continued…

Here are the wings we made.

They were basically the easiest thing ever to make. Amanda did all the work nonetheless :)

Here’s what you need:

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 3 lb chicken wings (about 16)
  • **we added 3 Tbsp of honey and a dash of nutmeg to the recipe

Here’s what you do:

  • Preheat broiler and oil rack of a broiler pan.
  • Stir together garlic, five-spice powder, salt, and soy sauce in a large bowl.
  • Cut off and discard tips from chicken wings with kitchen shears or a large heavy knife, then halve wings at joint. Pat dry and add to spice mixture, tossing to coat.
  • Arrange wings in 1 layer on broiler pan and broil 6 to 7 inches from heat, turning over once, until browned and cooked through, 16 to 20 minutes total.

*Just a note: when we tasted the seasoning/rub mix…it was NOT tasty. If you are a “taster” like me, just a heads up — I didn’t think these would be very good — they turned out delish! Much better than ordering take out.

At this point, I had seriously overindulged. Tons of guac, chips, bruschetta, ice cream…and then I had some wings and…

MORE ICE CREAM.

Ugh. I went overboard and felt really crappy this morning. It’s easy for me to dwell on things, especially when I feel I’ve eaten badly, but I tried to just not think about it and get back on track this morning.

I started the day with some unpictured PBBT. The ush.

Then went to Karen’s for lunch. Much to my dismay there was no split pea :( I tried the zucchini potato soup instead and it was really good. Did not fill me up nearly as well as split pea, however.

Also had a lovely pear.

I’m continuing “back on track” this evening for dinner and having some defrosted lentil soup.

How do you get “back on track”?

First eats

Hey there! Today’s rain started out not so bad this morning, but it is currently down pouring in NYC and I came home sopping wet! My umbrella became completely useless once I got caught up on a block that is a notorious wind tunnel on my walk home! Warm and dry until I leave for a meeting later this afternoon…

Breakfast! Almost every morning I use my Bodum French press to make coffee. I love it. The coffee I have been using for awhile now is the house roast from Think Coffee.

Most days I have the same breakfast…whole wheat toast with peanut butter and banana.

I had lunch today at Karen’s. You’ll be seeing a lot of this place on the blog because they make the best homemade soups and sandwiches. Plus, it’s on my walk home from school :) My ultimate favorite is the vegan split pea soup, but despite the soup-perfect crummy weather today, I went for the tuna dill sandwich. This one is always a winner! Not too much mayo and the dill flavor always comes through. And it comes on the best multigrain bread. Love <3

The wind tunnel also known as Astor Place.

A little dessert — spoonful of Nutella!

I have a fun recipe planned for dinner so stay tuned! See you later.
